Hot Club D’Afrique is an all acoustic South African gypsy jazz quartet from Johannesburg,
featuring accordion, violin, guitar, acoustic double bass, and French and English vocals.
This style of music was popularised in Paris in the 1930s by the famous Quintette of the
Hot Club of France founded by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.
The band’s repertoire includes swing jazz and romantic songs of the 30s and 40s, the music of Django
Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, Edith Piaf and others.
Hot Club D’Afrique pays tribute to the original “Quintette du Hot Club de France”
founded in 1934. Similar “Hot Clubs” have formed all over the world, such as “The Hot
Club of San Francisco” and “The Hot Club of Europe”.
The original Hot Club’s music could be heard in cafés, concert halls and bars on the
streets of Paris, France and throughout Europe.
The style creates a romantic French atmosphere, and is celebrated in the soundtracks of
modern films such as “Midnight in Paris” and “Sweet and Lowdown” and the classic
French film “Chocolat”.
The band members are:
Kevin Drummond (lead guitar) , Theodora Drummond
(accordion), Frances van der Walt (violin and backing vocals), Katharina van der Walt
